The Skin I Keep begins in Kazakhstan during the final years of the Soviet Union and follows a life across countries, cultures, and generations.
Through family, motherhood, ambition, and personal experiences, the memoir explores how our understanding of life changes with time.
Some memories are difficult. Others are filled with warmth, humor, and ordinary moments that stay with us.
It is a story about looking back with understanding, without allowing the past to define the future.

Assel Nussubaliyeva was born in Almaty, Kazakhstan, and moved to the United States at sixteen. Her life and career have taken her across countries and cultures, from New York to Moscow, Dubai, and South Florida.
With more than twenty years of experience in architecture and interior design, she is the Design Principal at AN Design Global. She is also a mother, and motherhood remains an important part of her life and perspective.
The Skin I Keep is her first memoir. Through personal memories and reflections, she writes about family, identity, belonging, and the experiences that have shaped her understanding of life.
She lives in South Florida with her daughter.
